Small-Scale Grain Raising by Gene Logsdon was recommending by Carol Deppe in the first few chapters of The Resilient Gardener, and I have always been interested in grain crops, so I got a copy second hand online. It was originally published in 1977 and is still very applicable. I thought it paired nicely with The Resilient Gardener as a lot of these older techniques and traditions that have fallen out of favor will likely be especially applicable during uncertain times. Logsdon goes over growing, cultivating, harvesting, processing and storing for all the main grain crops and some more uncommon ones. He also has recipes for using the grain in the kitchen and for animal feed. There’s a cool hand illustrated glossary of various tools and equipment in the back. I loved reading this book. It’s filled with anecdotes from Logsdon’s life as a farmer and it felt more like having a conversation with a knowledgeable person than reading. The idea of growing grain crops has always felt very daunting. Now I honestly I can’t wait to try.
