The farm, then vs now

One of our first ever farm stands at Ypsi Farmers Market (and Zach too).

And just like that we are in July, well into the summer. Hard to believe that already half of year has passed by. There is still so much to do but also we have been taking the opportunity to take stock and appreciate what we have accomplished. The farm is looking so good! At this point over three quarters of the farm is planted and it is dramatically different from the field which we started with.

Since our initial tillage and bed shaping we have left the ground undisturbed and I’m happy to report that in the garden we regularly find frogs and mushrooms and fireflies among the vegetables. It is our ultimate goal to integrate into the local ecosystem as much as possible. As we have been progressing through this season it seems like we are doing just that.

How it started…

How it’s going! So much has been planted and grown in such a short time!

The past couple weeks we have been harvesting on Friday’s. Being able to harvest food that we planted and cultivated is an amazing feeling. Cutting and packing our amazing lettuce mix is a particularly cathartic experience. I cannot wait until we are harvesting tomatoes, peppers and eggplants for everyone.

We are still a ways off from harvesting summer fruits, though. Our late start to the year is definitely the most noticeable with these slow growing crops. That being said we have been seeing some encouraging growth in our tomato and cucumber plants. Most have flowers and we are going to be putting the first trellising string on these plants today.

Our produce is now in Argus! You can find our Cosmic Lettuce Mix, chard, kale, radishes and summer squash at both the Packard and Liberty locations. We are always looking for ways to make food as accessible as possible and will keep you posted on new places you can discover our produce.

Speaking of accessibility, we are fully set up to accept WIC payments at the Ypsilanti Farmer’s Market. We have been told that we are the first and only at the market able to do so and are tremendously proud of that fact. The market can also provide EBT, Prescription for Health and Double Up Food Bucks tokens that we happily accept.

Once again we will be at the Ypsilanti Market this weekend (Saturday 9am-1pm, 16 S Washington St., Ypsilanti MI 48013). In case you missed it we were given a Vendor Spotlight by the market on Instagram!

We are so eternally grateful for all of the support we have been receiving at market. It means the world. We are going to continue to provide as much beautiful produce as we possibly can!

All the best,

Zach and Magda
